RS is right about a bad pilot bearing in the flywheel as a possible cause. If the clutch shaft is not motionless in neutral when shifting into reverse you get a crunch. This bearing is fragile and I think that it gets whacked when people install clutches and jam the clutch shaft against the bearing.
Another contributor to clutch shaft motion is corrosion or lack of lubrication on the clutch shaft splines where they contact the clutch disk. If the splines are not properly greased when assembled, the clutch disk will not slide freely on the shaft and will hang up against the flywheel or pressure plate surface and cause the shaft to spin in neutral.
If both of these issues are addressed, there is no reverse crunch and you do not have to shift into another gear prior to reverse.
