1992 was the last year for the "base" 900 as it was eliminated for MY1993. I assume the reason this happened was the ever-shrinking gap between the base car and S model. Back in the mid '80s, the S featured leather, sunroof, alloy wheels, power things, fancier upholstery, a rear seat with armrest and head restraints, better brakes ('87), earlier addition of ABS and air bag ('89) and most notably the LH-controlled 16 valve engine ('86-'89).
Since the rear axle got a sway bar in '89 or '90, the rear seat got the center armrest in '89 or '90, all models got ABS, air bags, and the center console in '90, and there was no difference in the 16 valve engine in the S and base from '89 onward, the only real differences distinguishing and S by 1992 were the sunroof, leather, power gadgetry, and maybe the audio system.
Here's an excerpt from the spotter's guide, found on TSN in the FAQ/classic 900/900 History section:
Look to the wheels and you'll easily distinguish the 1992 Saab 900. A
three-spoke, asymmetric alloy design was offered on 900 Turbo models, while
900S variants rolled on a new 15-spoke alloy style. The 900 continued to
feature steel wheels, but aesthetics were improved with a new 16-spoke,
full wheel cover. More readable instrument graphics gave the 900 series a
cleaner instrument panel appearance.
