No, and yes. Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Anyway to speed up seat heater..., Jeff Cunningham, Tue, 29 Oct 2002 22:14:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The seat heater has only two settings - On or Off. But-
In the heaters without a dash controller, the thermostat closes (applies current) if the thermostat is below 50 degrees, off at 80.
With the controller type, the on-off temp depends on the setting.
Either controller applies either 12 volts or none. Nothing in-between. You can't force any more amps in unless you increase the voltage or decrease the resistance. I don't want to think about 24 volt seat heater systems, or re-wiring the seat.
That's the no. What's the Yes? Your butt doesn't care about amps or watts. It wants heat. And that heat is at the surface. You can't make the heater heat up faster, but you can influence how hot the seat gets.
The thermostat shuts off the seat when it gets warm enough. But the heating element has to heat up all the foam and your butt. Just like the engine can be warm, but it takes time to get the cooling system up to thermal equilibrium, the same is true of the seat. Chances are the element cycles on and off a few times before the seat cushion comes up to full temp.
Don't assume the temperature sensor is at the same place as your butt.
So what can you do? Well, keep the seat heater on longer. If you have a controller based system, set it to 3. It doesn't get any hotter, but the longer the element is on, the more time it has to pour heat through the seat foam. In the case of the non-controller system, move the thermostat farther away from the heating element. That will effectively increase the shut-off temp, making for a hotter seat.
Audi seat heaters go to 6, VW to 5. A setting of 3 is a bit hotter than a Saab 3, and a 5 or 6 will render lard. I don't think they get to temp any faster, or pull any more current. It's just that keeping the seat on longer makes for a faster warmup.
