The one thing I forgot to ask was if you had the Seat Heater Controller in the dash or not. So, let's go with everything.
If you DON'T have the seat heater controller -
The YELLOW wire is 12 volts all the time, and the BLACK wire is ground. The heating element has a thermoswitch inside the seat, so the way to tell if the heating element is open is to undo the connector, and on the seat side, measure resistance between the YELLOW and BLACK when the seat is COLDER than 54 degrees F. The thermoswitch is closed below 54.
I'm going to assume you've got the controller-type seats, as they were available by '87. Yes, there is a 10 pin connector, but no, it's not under the seat - that connector is by the steering column. You want the connector under the seat.
Interestingly, according to my manual, there is an 8 pin connector under the seat, but only in the '91 and later cars. Go figure.
For the controller-type seats, the yellow or yellow/white wire is the switched power from the controller. This is 12 volts when the controller wants the seat on, 0 volts at off. The Blue wire is the thermosta, and Black is ground. To tell if the heating element is open, remove the connector, and measure resistance between the yellow or yellow/white, and black. It should be only a few ohms.
Make sure the black wire has a good contact to ground.
If none of this makes sense, please let me know if you have the seat controller in the dashboard or not.
Good luck!
