Brian,
I just did a major timing chain, balance chain, rebuilt head job on my '94 Aero. I triple checked the timing marks to make sure it works. I have a little rough idle, also. I just but about 100 on her and it seems to be getting better. I still have to investigate.
About four months ago, I did a engine swap on my '88 SPG and she was rough for the first few hundred miles. It has gotten better. The point is that I don't think being off a tooth would cause the poor idle on your car, considering that you have decent power and good compression. I would assume you do not hear any chain noises. I would suggest that you take it on a long drive and see what you get. Hold off on ripping off the valve cover. Chances are you will not see anything.
Good luck
Patrick
