While looking over Eric-MN's new-to-him 900 today we checked the tranny fluid level. Odd thing was that the fluid looked like a latte. Not the usual mayonnaise you get on the oil dipstick in cold weather but consistent chocolate milk color. Didn't smell like gear oil and really didn't smell like regular dino oil either. The car seems to have had relatively decent fluid service by its PO since the brake fluid wasn't black, coolant wasn't cruddy and brown and the tranny lube was above the max. I wonder if it being above the max mark may mean it's oil being whipped up. Thing is, there were no bubbles, it wasn't frothy and the color and texture was consistent. So, I figure its whipped 10w30...any thoughts?
Eric - sorry I beat you to posting this...I was curious. If you need a hand with the new belts just let me know. You may as well just get all new ones so you know their age - cheap insurance since when one goes, it often takes the others with.
