I have the above car, with a sound engine, almost perfect interior (headliner needs to be replaced, and a brand new tranny. I made the mistake of making it my son's car, and now it no longer looks pristine. In the process of assessing it for body work, I was told by the body man that because the 900 4-door doors were poorly designed, they retain water, accounting for extensive rust which is not yet visible to the casual observer; I saw some minor rust, but he says this is extensive, much worse than is apparent to the casual observer. I must admit, I have not checked it out carefully, with the rubber off. He says this is a common finding in this model; the remedy is to replace, rather than repair the doors, which he says are expensive, and not easy to find without rust. He estimated $2000 just for them, exclusive of the other body work needed. The latter is a dented R rear door (if not replaced), brokenfog lites, gouged rear bumper, and slightly dinged hood, which will not close without hitting the shotgun door unless handled with love and kisses. The total estimate was $8000, which is about what I paid for it. I can get an SPG in good shape for that, but I somwhow ate to let this one die - ithere are too few left as it is. It has been a reliable car, and I think it verges on elegance, even if it is an automatic. (I prefer a 5-speed, but the kid and my wife can't drive anything but an automatic.) My questions are:
1) Are the doors that rare without rust, and so expensive?
2) Assuming the worst, is there a fix that will save these doors and allow water to drain from them in the future?
3) Is restoration of an automatic a waste, given that the manual is so much better?
4) Are there simpleminded tasks I might learn to perform which would lessen the cost ofbringing this car back?
Thanks for any available help.
