I had 193K on the engine which had been abused(lack of fluid changes) so I found an excellent cond. '91 Turbo complete engine with 82K miles on it which is being put in my car since the engine has to be pulled for the tranny anyway. I'm having my tranny rebuilt with the pinion upgrade kit from Swedish Dynamics which is a stronger pinion than later cars. If your mech rebuilds your tranny the cost will depend on how much has to be replaced. Shop around. I felt I could save money by having my mech rebuild it for me. I beleve '89 and on had larger pinion. I'm not sure if the shaft got bigger then or in 1990. If you are swapping the whole tranny I think any will work but make sure you have the larger pinion which I believe started in '89 like I said. Or I guess you could get any tranny and have the pinion upgrade kit put in but this might not be cost effective. I think the Swedish Dynamics site says the Ericson tranny is really good but I'm not an expert. Lets see what the other tranny gurus have to say.
