just to finish off.. another couple of hours today got it all back together.. half a dozen turns of the engine and it all fired up perfectly..
the moment of panic.. as it warmed up huge great clouds of steam started coming outta the exhaust.. shit thought i.. till i realized that the exhaust system probably had anything up to a gallon of coolent in it from the major water leak into the cylinder.. he he.. after half an hour of idling the steam was still coming out.. one heck of a lot when the engine was revved.. a quick 10 mile blast at 80 mph down the A1 was needed to get it all out of the pipes.. so far everything looks okay..
snags.. mainly the need to jack the back of the engine.. those two bolts holding the pump bracket to the head could be hard to get back in.. some carfull raising and lowering of the engine is required.. mine went in fairly easy but its obvious that in some cases they could be a pain.. a short stubby spanner is also usefull to remove the two upward facing bolts at the timing chain end of the head.. otherwise the job was straight forward enough.. no real difficult bits..
