As the turbo bearings wear the turbo shaft begins to piston in and out and get sloppy. When this occurs the turbo fan blades begin to contact the turbo housing, and the grating sound at up to 100,000 rpm makes the whirring sound. It sounds cool but it is not, as it is a sign of wear and tear. It will dissappear after you rebuild the system, but your turbo might last for years and years this way or might blow a bearing tomorrow. The good news is that a blown bearing usually will not stop you from driving, but you will smoke and blow oil depending on if it is the exhaust vs intake side. If you are a novice, buy a rebuilt turbo from an advertiser on this page. If you are used to working with tools and are up for a moderately easy job, you can buy a rebuild kit from the same people for about 100 bucks. Frequently the exhaust side of the turbo casing is cracked from age and use and time. If that is the case buy a rebuilt unit and kill 2 birds with one stone, as you will not be able to weld these cracks because they are too deep and run at crazy angles. They usually begin at the "wastegate" hole and work their way in.

Look at the Swedish Dynamics website. They expalin this stuff well, but they pissed me off a bit. After ordering my kit (AND PAYING), I was told that because my turbo uses a carbon seal rather than a metalic one that they did not support it. This was only after pulling my turbo for a 4 hour job and then having to let my car sit for over a week while they tried to get their act together. I needed to machine a part for another 50 bucks! I was and am pissed. They do not mention anywhere on their site that they only support certain turbos that are more common in the USA, and I felt that their service was slow to realize and then explain the problem because they kept sending me parts that were not compatible with my system despite in-depth and painfully accurate descriptions from me. They had no trouble taking my money though!
