No Reverse - won't go into reverse

The car is an 86 900S with 5-speed tranny. My son and his friend were at the mall and left his stereo on long eneough that he killed the battery. He didn't know how to pop start the car so his buddy jumped in the driver seatand took care of things. When the car was towed home I accessed the damages. There was no resistance when you turn the key and the shifter was bent and could be rotated in circles. Obviously his friend didn't know about reverse locks and such and decided brute force could overcome the resistance. I replaced the gear at the bottom of the ignition, got a replacement shifter and associated hardware and got it all back together. It will not find the slot for reverse. I can get it far enough to remove the key and get it in to start the car but it won't lower into gear. I screwed the adjustment all the way up on the shifter so that should not be interfering. Is there something in the tranny itself that could have been bent that is keeping the gate closed on me? My son needed the car to return to college so I sent him off with the knowledge that he can't back up. I am not very comfortable like that so I want to have a game plan of attack for when he comes home again. Thanks for any suggestions.
