My 1990 is rusting there. I'm having that and the control arm area fixed next week. I started poking around on my car after I flaked off a couple peices of metal from the bottom drivers side door. I can sand, putty and paint that but....
I found soft spots in the forward section of both rear wells. Right under the little drain hole? that is at the forward section of the peice that forms the shock tower. What the hell is a drain hole doing there? I don't think any water can get inside the shock tower except through that hole/slot!!! So...inside I pulled the rear seat and looked underneath the soundproofing and sure enough....I poked three 1/2 dollar holes through...2 on 1 side and 1 on the other.
Thought about POR 15 and putty but decided to have them welded up instead because I'm not planning on selling the car. I think I caught it all soon enough to stop it....we'll see. Rust is cancer. The rest of the car is beautiful...no cosmetic rust.
Not much help here....just letting you know there are others trying to save their car too.
