The major drawback with the automatic isn't reliability, but that it has only three speeds. Combine that with the inherent lack of efficiency of an automatic and the glaring lack of a turbo, and you have one slow car.

Yeah, I know it's just the grocery-getter and you won't be challenging Vipers at every light. But a Normally Aspirated 3 speed automatic is really slow. It will also be very buzzy on the highway, turning lots of RPM to keep from being run over. I consider a OG900 NA automatic as being too slow for safety.

My opinons, without otherwise seeing the car-
Only get an OG900 automatic if you absolutely need an automatic. Three speeds is a major drawback. If you can drive a 5-speed, wait for one.

If you must get an automatic (and there is no shame in it -there are many good reasons - I know, I have all autoboxes), get a turbo. It will still be buzzy on the highway, but at least you'll be able to merge without having to file a flight plan in advance.

There are a lot of OG900's out there. Wait for a good one.

For any used car, get the maintenance records. No maintenance records? Then back away slowly, then turn and run. No car responds well to poor maintenance, and Saabs respond particularly poorly. Yes, the car may have been maintained meticulosly, but with no paperwork to back it up, you don't know.

Call me cynical, but I WOULD NOT take the word of the mechanic selling the car. He has a vested interest in making you believe the car is in good shape. If you don't know a lot about the breed, and a particular car has your lust, find a Saab mechanic and pay them a few bucks to look it over. DON'T go by the word of the place selling them.
