Should I be boosting into the red?

Allow me to toss this one up: I have a '94 900T convertible - my first Saab, the commemorative edition (red box, 185hp). Now, ever since I bought it this summer, I've felt the boost was a bit weak - it would boost sluggishly, to a max of just below the border of yellow and red (with 91 octane gas). It just didn't feel that fast (it only has 86K) and it only improved slightly after I replaced the plugs, checked the timing and determined there are no vac leaks. So, I decided to try increasing the base boost by shortening the wastgate rod two full turns (~0.5 psi?). All I can say is, wow - now I understand the love for these cars. It spools much more quickly and now seems effortless, especially at highway speeds. It can now boost about 1/8th into the red, but only at WOT under high load. I understand I'll only know for sure with an accurate boost gauge, but is any amount into the red too high? Am I protected by the APC or fuel cutoff? Is this bad for the long term? Opinions? -Thanks, Chuck
