radio problems ('93)

The original radio in our 93 900s has become non-functional. As is often the case with these radios, there was a bad connection (presumably the connector in the "cage"), so speakers were cutting out, etc. To fix this problem, I removed the radio and cage and remounted the connector more solidly. Everything's back in the car now. So far, so good.
The problem now is, when the radio is turned on, it flashes the word "CODE" and beeps (indicating the code needs to be entered). When I try to enter the code (something I have done successfully many times in the past - we have the correct code), it continues beeping and does not accept any numbers.
I also tried leaving the radio on (ie for an hour to retry a wrong code entry), but it beeps indefinately once turned on. This is too distracting while driving so I have not been able to leave it on for a full hour (and I'm sure it used to stop beeping after about 10 seconds if no code was entered).
The radio had been out of the car for a long time before I had a chance to fix it (about 6 weeks). Has anyone else had a similar experience, or know what to do? I'm afraid I may need to replace it...
Any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks...
james
