Fuel gauge light and heater question

I have an '88 900S. Has anyone ever replaced the illumination lights on the dash board that light up the fuel gauge? I was told by the dealer that I should be able to get it by going in through the left-side dash speaker on top of the dashboard. But I didn't see any easy way of getting to it. Do I need to take off the front of the dash? I had it partly off to replace the Heater Control Valve, but I didn't have it off far enough to see whether I can get the light from there.
Second, I bought the car used about 6 years ago. Ever since I have owned it, the center heat register on the dash refuses to put out hot air when the heat is on (never tried the AC since it's broken). Air is definately coming out, but it's never hot like the left and right registers. What should I be looking for here?
Anyway, thanks for any help. I'm starting to develop a great hobby with fixing up this car. It has 173K miles on it, and I'm determine to go over 225K!
