Here's the set-up: Had a CA state smog test done last week on my 82 turbo 900 CIS equipped engine. It failed. The suggestion was to replace the O2 sensor since that was the only thing I hadn't done tune-up wise prior to the test. I replaced it with a Bosch approved sensor, and for added measure I adjusted the A/F ratio to a "leaner" setting. Here's how: with the engine warm and idling, I inserted the appropriate sized allen wrench into the adjustment hole and turned it counter-clockwise about 180 degrees until the engine began to struggle when idling. Then I turned it clockwise until the idle settled, about halfway to the initial setting. The kicker is that when I retested for smog this afternoon it failed even worse than the first time! Fortunately for me the wiley CA state smog technician (a retired computer expert) discovered that one of the spark plug wires was loose and wouldn't remain attached to the spark plug. Lucky for me I had a spare wire in the trunk and after replacing the bad wire then retesting for smog the car passed with flying colors! The engine failed those two times because of an ill-timed ignition from that bad plug wire! I'll wager that the prior O2 sensor was fine as was the initial air fuel ratio.
So here's my question: is there a reliable simple old school method of adjusting the air fuel ratio on these older CIS systems? With the current leaner setting the engine runs fine when warm, but I fear I may have a problematic cold start problem tomorrow morning. I prefer a happy medium between an as lean as possible good cold start and the rich limit of the CA state smog allowance. Any insights?
