I've never run my tank completely dry, but I've pushed it. I've never had any dirt/fuel-related problems, but I stick to stations which do a lot of business.
What is the "jet-pump scavenger"? Is this the pre-pump that fills the "can" the main pump sits in to stay cool & lubed? I don't have my manual with me, but I thought mine said it could take as much as 2 gallons to get the car started if it's not on level ground (which is why I suggested the 2-1/2 gal can).
I agree that it's not something you want to do frequently. I was suggesting it as a one-time thing, just to give a better understanding of the operation of the car. It's always good to know your limits.
