That is the end of the engine with the timing chain. It's also the end of the engine that tends to get the least oil flow to the hydraulic lifters.
As pursang says, it might be a timing chain issue. The chain isn't broken, but it could be loose, or may have even slipped a tooth, causing incorrect valve opening. If the noise isn't going away when warm, I would ASAP pull the valve cover and inspect the chain. Turn the engine to TDC for cylinder #1, and check how the alignment marks on the cams line up with those on the head. The Bentley manual has a nice picture on this. This will show if a cam slipped a tooth, or if the chain is loose. If the chain is loose, it may be a faulty chain tensioner or a worn chain. Inspect the chain and cams for wear. Yes, a worn chain can make a lot of noise, and can be a precursor for chain breakage, which is catastrophic in this engine.
However, never diagnose a worn chain on noise alone. Inspect first. The chain may be fine. Inspect the chain guide in on the underside of the valve cover.
You might also have a stuck valve or lazy valve lifter. This can make a surprising amount of noise. Change the oil if the oil change interval is nearing. It also wouldn't hurt to stick an oil pressure gauge on the engine - just remove the oil pressure sender next to the oil filter and insert a calibrated gauge. Low oil pressure can show up as top-end noise. But a leaky/lazy lifter can make noise. It can also be a problem with the oil distribution lines to the lifters on that part of the head.
Good luck!
