I don't think I've ever seen a bad seat heater fuse Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Heated Seats Don't Work, Mark, Thu, 21 Nov 2002 12:49:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It's always a good thing to check. But I've never seen one fail.
Definately check the FAQ. But a basic-
On the older cars (pre '88, for sure), the seat heater is automatic. 12 volts is supplied via a yellow or yellow/white wire under the seat all the time the ignition is ON. Black is ground. On the driver's side, there is a thermoswitch in series with a heating element. The switch closes if the temperature of the switch drops below 50F, and shuts off above 82 F. The passenger side is similar, except there is a switch (looks like a chain) under the seat so the heater only works if someone is in the seat. The assumption is that there is always a driver in the seat when the car is being driven. Those silly Swedes!
The most common problem is that the heating element - just a piece of resistance wire - breaks. Most usually at the front outside edge of the bottom cushion, but it's happened in other places. To check, disconnect the connector under the seat, and use an ohmmeter to measure from yellow to black (on the seat side) when the seat is below 50F. You should read a few ohms. A failed element is an open.
The solution is to remove the seat cover (not hard) and resolder the wire. Finding the break is usually easy - there typically is a small scorch mark in the seat foam where the wire has broken.
