....before it dies completely. The rack on my '83 900T has been doing the same thing for at least two years. The o-rings that ride in the hollow aluminum rack wear grooves in the soft metal. That's what you feel when you head out in the morning. Once it warms up a tad it works fine.

A good rebuilt rack is bored oversize and sleeved with stainless steel bck to its original diameter. Since the steel sleeve is much harder than the aluminum the o-rings were riding on previously, the rack should last forever, at least theoretically.

If your rack leaks fluid, try using Valvoline synthetic power steering fluid. It meets the GM spec that SAAB demands, plus it will soften and swell the seals and o-rings so it won't leak anymore. Then all you have to deal with is the cranky wake-up symptoms. If they don't bother you, the rack will go a while longer.
