Lost power to Trans - fixable?

I had major car trouble today on my way in to school on my first official day of work. There was some knocking in the front passenger side end. I thought it was a mechanical problem with the axle or something. But, something popped and I lost all power to the transmission. I can shift the gears, but nothing happens. The engine runs fine, but it isn't driving the gears anymore. Is there a cable that connects the gear shifter to the transmission that may have popped?
Luckily, it happened a few blocks from the school and across the street from a mechanic. They are going to check it out tomorrow. Unluckily, many of my students saw me pushing my car to the mechanic and walking in to school. We had a laugh about it, but it was a little embarassing.
Thanks for your advice!
