saab headgasket failure seems to be caused by actual erosion of the headgasket material.. i think this is some kind of electrolytic action.. it does over time seem to happen to all saab headgaskets.. it might well be the reason why later gaskets have noticably smaller holes in them than the older ones.. holes that are quite a bit smaller than the actual waterway holes in the block and head.. some folks have suggested that this is to alter the flow of coolant going thru the head but i think its for far more simple reasons.. simply to provide more gasket material to erode.. he he.. this delaying the inevitable..
anyway your only cure is to replace the head gasket.. quite cheap if u do it yourself but expensive if u have to pay labour charges.. i did mine last week.. about 5 hours of my time plus the cost of one headgasket.. and the one special once in a lifetime tool.. the inverted torx socket for the head bolts..
u can as some would advice replace a lot more while u are at it.. but my repair cost me 15 quid for the gasket plus 3 quid for the socket.. plus time of course.. the intake manifold gasket came apart cleanly and so did the valve cover i did not need to replace either of these gaskets.. i left the exhaust manifold attached to the head..
