One of the worst DIY jobs on a 82 900T is replacing the starter. Located behind the exhaust manifold, there's no easy way to get at it other than to remove the manifold. I've had to to do it twice. The initial problem was solenoid failure when the engine was hot. I thought the problem was solved after the second replacement, but during this past summer's peak temps the problem returned. From my reading on this site, I reasoned the problem was a weakened (from age and abuse) solenoid lead wire, fixed by either replacing it (an involved harness job) or by adding a second ignition solenoid to feed a direct signal to the starter solenoid. I was about to tackle that job this coming weekend. But then last night after a cool evening drive to the local fast food joint, the starter refused to work. I had to roll it down a hill to start, and then this morning the ignition failed as well, a first ever for a cold start failure. So I popped the hood and thought to check the usual suspects like fuses, plus the connections on the alternator. The fuses and alternator wiring were sound, but while moving the harness aside near the brake booster I caught sight of a three prong wire connector seperated from it's other half, which was located underneath the main harness in a tricky location. Upon closer inspection, I could see that the connections were also fairly oxidized. After cleaning with a file and steel wool, then reconnecting the plug, the engine fired up normally. So that plug was obviously the starter wiring, and a possible weak link for the solenoid signal in general. I'm anxious to see if it works under hot conditions with a strengthened signal after cleaning.
