Recently on cold mornings (well, I am in TX so cold is relative, here it means 35-40F) I have heard a rattling or clinking with perhaps a bit of rubbing in there too(I don’t have a good word to describe it) noise from under the valve cover on the firewall side. It isn’t terribly loud but If you are inside the car you can hear it if you listen. After the car warms up it becomes much much quieter, you can only hear it if you pop the hood and listen for it. My uneducated (and perhaps paranoid) guess is that it is the timing chain. Does this sound right? Any other ideas? I have read some posts that would tend to downplay the chances it is the chain but it is a rattling noise, could this also be that the pad has dried out? I was also unsure what the fact that it goes away after it warms up meant.
Is this a sign that something is about to fail or is it just a sign of an older engine (’93 900S 137K) from other posts I have read it seems that the timing chain should last longer than this, when do they usually go? If it needs to be replaced is it something that should be done immediately to simplify it and prevent other problems or can I just keep driving and deal with it when something happens (since it seems like this is a big deal anyhow)? Could this be a sign that I need to adjust/replace the tensioner? The car drives great otherwise and unfortunately I don’t have a place to do any diy’s so I would take to my local Saab guy, (guessing $$$).
