thow it can be other things.. if its the solenoid it starts off as intermittent and gets worse over time.. the clicking is the solenoid starting to engage but failing to provide power to the starter motor.. a solenoid does two things basically.. its pre-engages the cogs and at the same time it should act like a relay and power up the starter motor.. sounds like yours is only doing half of its job sometimes..

check for bad connections around the main battery leads.. thow when these main terminal connections break down it normally need a jiggle to gets things again.. i think its most likely the starter solenoid on the way out.. it is a common fault after mucho usage..
