The man who stated Jaguar has replacements is even more on track than he knows! The small gear is replaceable too.

The gear he told you about was the BIG gear, but I would bet the gear you need to replace is the small one, or the one in contact with the cables that move the top up and down. Jaguar uses a similar gear of identical diameter and teeth, but it is replaceable, unlike the SAAB gear. The jaguar gear has a square hole in the middle, rather than the Saab gear, which is not replaceable and has a press on style round hole.

So, what do you do?

1) Get Jaguar gear with square hole
2) go to local machine shop with Saab assembly and Jaguar replacement gear
3) Have machine shop machine down the Saab spindle to mate properly with the Jaguar gear, (cost, about 30-50 bucks).
4) Save about $70 bucks!!!, as Saab only sells the entire assembly for about $150 AND Jaguar sells these gears for about 8 bucks apiece.

I did this on my old SPG and laughed all the way to the bank. The only reason I noticed this was that Jag and Saab use the same company to make the sunroof openers, and the only difference between the saab and the jag mechanisms are that they are set up at a 90 degree different angle, so the mechanisms are not interchangeable, BUT the gears are. The Jag gears are cheap, readily available, and make repair and replacement a breeze.

Good luck!
