Re: Alternator light on Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Alternator light on, Saana88 ![]() ![]() |
The alternator light being on means that the alternator is putting out less voltage than the battery. So almost by definition, the battery is probably OK.
The fact that the light comes on at low RPM tells me that the alternator is unable to supply the required current at low RPM. This can be due to a few problems -
Worn Brushed
Bad Voltage regulator
Blown diode (internal to the alternator)
Slipping belts.
check the belts for tightness. Otherwise, replacing the VR will cover both problems #1 and 2. There is the possibility of a blown diode in the alternator diode pack. This is easily checked with an oscilloscope. If you don't have one handy, an automotive electrical shop can do the test in a matter of minutes, alternator in the car.
Just because the part is only a couple of years old doesn't mean it can't die. Most parts have a 'full' lifetime, but some things die sooner, some last forever. If it dies sooner, put it down to bad luck.
