trog -- I knew perfectly about the situation in England. Having a House in Wiltshire and tried to get a job in England. But wasn't very happy with the working conditions so I decided going back to Switzerland would make more sense.
Four weeks ago I've been to England. Prices of fuel, labour and the daily life style (food, drinking etc) are raising every time I'm visiting England. I paid in Andover GBP 0.86/litre 4star petrol. The only petrol station for the next 20 mls....
I have a lot experience with the MOT, tends to be 'human' comparing with the Swiss MFK or German Tuev. All my cars are still on their UK plates, insured in England. Much cheaper than Switzerland and not so much hazzle with the MOT/MFK. And my cars are original, more genuine than a swiss plate. And most of them have the Road Tax Excemption.
And I'm able to sell the plates/reg.mark if I need money.... Got last visit an offer from a Chinese Business Person. I was tempted, but a Vanden Plas on a non original Plate? NO.
I have no need for a high mileage transport, but a car should be able covering 250mls without major breakdowns.
I've spotted a lot interessting cars at salvage yards with small dents or minimal faults. Like your Saab with a broken inhibitor switch, worn clutch slave cylinder, blown head gasket, seized radiator and so on.
Last year I bougth for just GBP 2,000.00 a Silver Shadow MK I 1969 in need of new brake pades front and four new tyres. I foul sold the car this year. Was standing for more than 6 months, TAX Exemption was done, two months MOT. I drove the Rolls from Liverpool area to Zurich not missing a beat. Was a real bargain.
I was browsing throug the Autotrader, findit ads and found several interesting Saabs, all of them in the North.
I'll get a 'new' (used) cylinder head from a Saab Enthusiast so I can fix my Saab in a few days.
If you can find a reasonable priced Vanden Plas 1300/1100 (the ADO 16 BMC range) please let me know the details. I'm searching for a new project. Should be MOT'd and driveable. Dark colours preferd. Low mileage etc. I suppose you know what I'm searching for...
After a very long period of searching for the fault I found the reason. Thanks to you and your experience.
