Sure, it will work, i.e. shorten the spring but you will also have changed the spring rate. Not only will the car not handle properly but there is a good chance that you may snap a spring because the factory annealling has been removed.
If you wanted to go this route, a better idea would be to take the springs to a suspension shop and have them do the work under controlled conditions.
