Nobody here is disputing the fact that HBs fail and need to be replaced. SAAB made a compromise with the length of the front pulley/HB in order to fit the engine in the engine compartment and that's what we have to live with.
And, since Hans I. said, "I drew a chalk line across all the pulleys, and sure enough, after I ran the car, they were no longer aligned. The inner pulley was about 70 degrees off the original mark.", that means that his has failed.
All I was saying was, essentially, that there is you can draw a chalk mark across all of the pulleys and make your diagnosis. Which, as above, is what Hans did.
Either way works.
