I've had 2 "S" cars, an 86 2.0 and a 92 2.1. The 2.1 cruises comfortably at 85 - 90 at about 3200rpm with plenty of power left for passing. I drove that car from New Orleans to New York several times and loved every minute of it. I've done the same trip in a turbo. I like the "S" better except for passing and getting on the highway.
Go for it, just make sure the ignition bits are in good shape.
