Fuel puzzle (lots of info)

Boy oh boy, I'm running out of ideas. My 85T runs great and it's the best boosting saab I've owned. The needle gets all the way to the end of the orange and actually stays there for a while.
The problem is the rough idle that starts after a minute or two or driving that's accompanied by fuel pump noise. The noise arrives after a short drive, but doesn't go away once I get back to the driveway and let it idle for a while.
Good idle = nice fuel pump hum - lousy idle = buzzy fuel pump.
Changed fuel filter yesterday, swapped in a different fuel pump the day before. I guess the "new" pump could also be bad, but I'm wondering if there's something that could be causing a good pump to pump poorly. Also, I removed the pump cover and the top of the main pump is pretty warm to the touch. That's not normal is it?
If the fuel pump is bad, why does it drive and boost so great but idle poorly? I'm tired of being covered in gasoline so I'm hoping to look elsewhere for the problem.
FYI: new fuel filter, full tank of gas, does the same thing when fuses 30&27 are jumped bypassing relays and ECU, cleaned electrical connectors and grounding points in engine and trunk, FPR does not leak and has new vacuum tube, new AIC, new plugs - cap - rotor - wires
Thanks a lot for any advice.
