I've got one of those illuminated SRS lights on my dash right now...second time in 3 months. My independent was not able to reset it so I was forced to take it to a dealer. Two days and $100 later the light was off but nothing replaced; they cleared fault codes. they mentioned that if it occurred again, I'd have to replace sensors and wiring....> $600.
I noticed what I believe are the sensors are stainless steel, one side being trianglar-shaped, the other bring more square. Both are held with Torx screws but with a pin dead center of the screw. I did not know that there are "tamper-resistant" torx screws. Do I have this right? I've never seen "special" torx screwdrivers.
Since I will have to have someone clear the fault code again, I was thinking that maybe I should replace the sensors first. The car is a '90 and never been hit. The wiring that leads to the sensors uses a spring-loaded clip which functions properly. The wires are still in their harness. The car has always been garaged and the engine compartment is very, very clean. I'm not thinking that the wires need replacement. As far as engine heat, the car only has 60,000 miles, so, I'm not thinking that the wires are brittle yet. Just how much do these sensors cost?
