Hey there, yeah actually what I ended up doing was undoing the two main rack bolts, and then trying to put the rack up into the clamping joint with a jack. That didn't work. So what I then did was bolt the rack back in place, and then I felt up higher onto the steering column to see if there was another clamping joint. There was :) so I undid that sucker, and took the steering column out totally.
Then I was able to clean the splines with brake cleaner, and it also gave me some more flexibility in getting the clamping joint onto the rack when I put it back in. Once I got the one on the rack side in, I just had to put the other side back onto the steering wheel. The underside of the dash is a lot cleaner and easier to access than that one on top of the rack.
Getting the steering column on turned out to be the only real pain in the ass in the whole replacement of the rack. Not looking forward to doing another.
Thanks for asking how it went!
Rob
