10w30 is the specified weight for motor oil. As a substitute GL4 gear oil could be used(75w90 +/-, which is about same weight as 10w30 motor oil despite #'s). The synthetic gear oils that lots use are Redline MTL, Honda synth man trans fluid, or Amsoil. I have had good luck with Redline MTL for better winter shifting as bj suggests. If a car now has GL-4 conventional(not synth) gear lube, most people stick with it. Some have flushed and made the change to synth GL-4.
Leakage when switching is not so much an issue with trans lube as with engine lube. The engine has front and rear crank seals that often leak when switching to synthetic oil
