Greetings:
I have a couple of comments then several questions about ball joint replacement. First, the comments:
1. Do not, I repeat, do not let a ball joint completely break. It's dangerous, it makes the repair quite difficult, you'll rip a tripod bearing apart and it's the mechanical equivalent of tatooing "I'm a dummy" on your forehead...not that I'd know anything about this...just thought I'd pass it along ;-)
2. 6 point sockets. I'm sure any experienced mechanic will tell you that the only tool to use for potentially stuck nuts/bolts is a 6 point socket, and they'd be right. I had slightly rounded a bolt head with a 12 point and the 6 point was able to grab it without a problem.
Now the questions:
1. If one ball joint is bad should I replace all four? I have a bad lower right (different car than the one mentioned above) and I believe they're original ('92 w/ 135,000 miles). I figure since I'm in there and getting dirty I might as well do the upper and since I've already got all the tools out I might as well do the left side.
2. While I'm in there I might as well replace the shock bushings since I'll be removing the lower shock mount. It seems like you could replace the ball joints without removing the shock but several procedures I've read all say to remove the shock.
3. Has anyone used the special Saab tool to remove ball joints? If so is it worth it? Or is it just as effective to just try to knock the ball joint out less, shall we say, elegantly (read: hit with something)?
4. Since I'm releasing the lower shock mount should I just go ahead and replace the shocks? I don't notice any problem with the shocks but at 10 years and 135,000 miles it might not be a bad idea.
5. How about replacing tie rod ends? Again there's no visible problem -- I'm just thinking preventative here.
TIA,
Doug
