unexpected expensive X-mas present that I had to pay for! Dropped in '91 turbo engine complete with turbo with 82K miles (cost: $1100.00 incl ship). Rebuilt tranny with pinion upgrade, rebuilt power steering rack and put in '91 engine for (cost of: $3900.00). Car is a lot quieter now and tranny is very smooth. Have a lot more power now but I'm being gentle until tranny break in. At 185hp and I think I want more. My wife said no more money on Saab for a while. I told her the engine and tranny will last 20 years if I take good care of them so the cost will balance out over time. A good trick my mech told me about rev gear is when you feel some resistance going into rev just let out the clutch slowly until it is pulled into rev. This will avoid the dreaded thump and possible chip going through pinion. Decided to go for Mobil 1 10w30 and Honda MTL for tranny to reduce costs. This '91 block has a lot of room around the oil filter as compared to my '88 block so that is nice. We had to machine my tranny case a bit to make room for the bigger pinion. It appears the tranny case on my '88 was a non-turbo tranny but it worked out fine and I still have my drain plug. Now I just need to install the Indiglo guages and replace a broken fog lamp and I will be done for a while. I hope to get the hoodscoop hooked up this summer.
Happy holidays to all you Saabers.
Best, KB.
