if its not coincidence that is a clue.. your waterpump not working would cause the overheating leading to a coolent loss due to the coolent boiling away.. thats about the only way it all connects..

one other point your radiator does not need to be empty.. once your coolent level drops to the point that it can no longer circulates properly overheating will happen.. at a guess i would estimate a loss of five or six pints might produce this affect.. it should also take longer than six or seven minutes of driveing to produce any of the things u describe.. unless your battery is shot and your car was very hot and low on water to start with..

basically u have described the exact symptoms of driving with busted fanbelts.. no alternator and no waterpump.. having said that i assume u have checked that u still have some.. he he
