In my efforts to chase down the nagging cold start rough idle issue, I've replaced the therm time switch as recommended, and opened the aux air valve to maximum setting. That worked fine until the temps dipped into the low 30's of late where I live in a 850 el. remote canyon. Seems the cut-off point for the smooth cold start in this car (82900T) was around 40 and above. Without really knowing for certain, I reasoned that the aux air valve was closing before it's time, meaning that the heat coil spring within the valve that closes as it heats was the issue. Perhaps it was just in need of replacement. As a test I pulled the plug one cold morning and started her up. Sure enough the idle was smooth well into normal operating temps, if a little too high because the valve was still partially opened. A trip to the SAAB supply store (junk yard) was in order to find a good newer aux air valve. I pulled one from a late model 900 8V n/a and tested it with both an ohm meter and a rigged 12V timed "close" test before the purchase. The closing rate was nice and slow, lasting a good 5 minutes. For the $7 (13 total including the $2 entrance fee and the delicious $4 taco lunch)I paid it was well worth it to see if that valve made a difference on my car. And it did. Big difference! Goodbye cold start idle problem. After sealing the lower lip with JB weld (a known vac/boost leak) and polishing the exterior to it's original finish, plus a good internal flush and lub, the valve now has a new home.
