Alternator/battery light

'88 900T.Something in my charging system has given up the ghost. My car was obviously running off the battery until it discharged, sputtered and died. I jumped it and it ran for a few minutes and died again. (battery's less than a year old)I had to abandon it on the curb several miles from my home and will deal with it this weekend. The battery light never came on. In fact, it doesn't come on when you turn the key on. Bentley says if that's the case, alt will not charge the battery. It would be great if all that's wrong is a burned out battery light. Can that be right though? In my quick review of previous posts, I didn't find any stories of where apparent Alt. failure turned out to be a burned out battery light.Hard to do much diagnostics on the side of the road and would like to avoid a tow truck.
Questions:
1)is the 2 amp lamp a dealer item? If so, could I jump the lamp until I can get to a dealer? (none local)
2)should I buy a voltage reg off a junk yard car and try that?
3)Interchangeability of voltage regs between my '88 and newer, say '91 cars.
Thanks for your thoughts
