Trying to wire my new cd player....help!

Ok, I've been working on installing a new cd player on my 88 900t all afternoon. My car came equipped with the clarion tape deck/eq system. I'm trying install the cd deck in the space where the eq used to be, but to still leave the old tape deck in place, and to still have it functioning. What i'm attempting to do is leave the wiring to the tape deck intact, but remove the eq, and just splice the new cd players wiring directly to the proper wires running to the tape deck. So, essentially, they'd be running through the same wires to the speakers, and same power wires as well. The idea would be to have one player on, using the system, while the other is powered off. Which should be alright for getting the units the power they require. Does this sound like a feasible plan or does anyone have any suggestions as to making this work? Do i run the risk of harming any compontents if i mess anything up? I'm fairly new to the audio installation thing, so any help is much appreciated! Thanks!
