but you can do a simple test to find out. It is hard to localize the sound,but if you take a piece of white chalk and mark the leading and trailing edges of that pulley, then start the car, then shut it off and look again. The chalk marks will no longer line up if the pulley is shot. It is two pieces connected by rubber and when the rubber wears out or becomes slick with oil the two pieces can move with respect to each other.
Of course, test the belt with your thumb for tightness first.
Very unlikely it is the alternator, by the way.
