your teminology is wrong.. its not a t-stat gauge simply a temperature gauge.. it probably is a faulty temperature gauge sensor connection causing your problem.. the sensor is easy to spot it dosnt have a real plug on the end of it and is simply a slide on metal tag.. its the only one like it.. all the other connectors have real looking plastic plugs on them..
the sensor is just under where the top hose connects to the t-stat housing.. the wire is likely to be making a bad connection to the sensor.. it is a pretty crappy type of connector.. look for a dangling wire its probably come off.. the slide on connector might still be on the end of the sensor..
the sensor is just a heat controled variable resistor for the guage.. it prodides the earth.. i think touching the wire directly to earth (the engine) should produce a full hot reading on the temp gauge..
