The steady stream of bubbles from the small hose is a sign of a blown headgasket or alot of air in the system. The rough running at start-up that gets better can be coolant in a cylinder that quickly gets burned off, also a sign of a blown headgasket.
I suspect that you might have another coolant leak causing the coolant loss and overheat that eventually allowed the temp gauge to drop as the coolant level dropped below the temp sensor near the thremostat. I would get a pressure tester for the resevoir and find the leak(s). The coolant on the grill could be from the radiator leaking or from a bad hose leak that squirts all the way through the radiator. When you continued to drive the car with the false 1/4 gauge reading, you could have severely overheated the engine resulting a cooked headgasket and maybe a warped head. That said, you might get lucky(25%) and if you fix the leaks and bleed the system of air, find that the bubbles stop and the rough running at start was just a fluke.
