So how hard is it to bend a driveshaft? I just replaced the passenger front wheel bearing in my 1989 900T, and while I was at it I decided to do the ball joints, upper and lower A-arm bushings, right motor mount, brake caliper, brake disc, pads, flexible brake line, sway bar bushings, shocks, and !! replace the drive shaft boots and repack with grease!!. This is where I think I must have run into trouble. I replaced the wheel bearing because of a rumbling noise loud in left turns and quiet in right. Sure enough, after disassembly, I broke the outer race apart and the bearing surface had a small spalled area. Fine, no problem. Now, after reassembly I have a horrible vibration, same in a corner or straight, becoming apparent at around 25 mph and getting progressively worse. Feels like a horribly out of balance tire. (I already swapped the tire to check that.) The reason I ask about bending a driveshaft, is that I had to use a press to get the tripod bearing off. No weird loading, all axial though. The problem may have occurred when I went to put the tripod bearing back on. Nothing good to press on, so I stuck the driveshaft into a pipe vice and used a soft mallet (with a proper collar) to drive the tripod back on. If I jack the car in the air and put the car in gear, I can see about 60 thousandths of radial movement in the shaft out by the inner driver, but none close to the outer CV joint. The inner driver itself does not have any run out or play in its bearing. So I guess the answer is obvious? I wouldn't think it would be that easy to bend a 1"+ driveshaft. When I regreased the inner driver all the bearing surfaces looked good. So what is the solution? Help!!
