You want oil on the chains immediately to facilitate the bleeding of air from the tensioner. If you haven't bolted on the front cover yet, tilt the trans back and pour a few oz. of oil onto the little shelf that forms part of the tensioner and squeeze the tensioner pads in and out until you feel them encounter solid resistance as air is displaced. This avoids a lot of chain slap that may otherwise occur on dry start.
