Mystery power loss-stall, fuel problem?

About six months ago I sold a friend my '90 900 16v. It has just developed a wierd problem which I only encountered once in 50,000 miles of ownership.
The car loses all engine power, and doesn't respond to the throttle and suddenly cuts out. When left for a minute or so, it will restart instantly with no trouble. When I had the car the engine check light came on, then went out.
My suspicion is that if may be a fuel supply problem. The reasoning being that if it were an ignition problem it would completely cut out and not resart.
The car may also have been low on fuel so here's my guess. Could there be sediment in the tank which is choking the supply to the in-tank pump? Is there a gauze filter at the pump? I've seen this problem once before on a Rover where the sediment surrounds the filter starving the pump of fuel which can't supply sufficient fuel under pressure to the injectors and the car cut out. Switching off, released the vacuum, the sediment is released from the gauze and the pump works again. This was usually worst when there was only a little fuel in the tank.
I suppose everyone will be out there celebrating the New Year, but if anyone can offer any help, I'd be greatful. Happy New Year!
