I don't know why you'd need to removed the rear tranny cover to drain it: THAT procedure is for those 1991-newer 900 owners who DON'T have a drain plug. Removing the cover is their only way to drain. (Their other claim to fame is a tranny oil filter, I'm told, built into the cover...)
If I were you, I'd just pull the plug to drain, as you would probably need a new gasket (extra expense) if you take off the cover.
That said, I have the same problem about shifting in cold weather. You may laugh when I tell you "cold," because I speak of North Carolina winters at about 2,000+ feet in elevation, but, nevertheless, below 40°F or so, it's like pullin' teeth to get it into second--until warm, anyway!
