87-

My cam timing marks didn't line up perfectly. Here's what I did, in order:

1) I used the Townsend Imports website procedure with some mods. You'll find that the natural state of the 'e' camshaft is at least one tooth to the intake side of the alignment arrow on the bearing cap. This placement is caused by the pressure of some of the lifters holding the valves open. I pulled the chain snug on the crankshaft then, using a wrench on the camshaft boss, rotated the cam to the alignment position and slipped on the exhaust sprocket. When I released the tension, the camshaft held the chain tension with the crank and freed up my hands. The 'e' cam alignment was now just slightly to the intake side of the arrow on the bearing cap. I used the cam alignment marks, not the marks on the sprockets (Anders' suggestion).

2) Now tackle the 'i' cam by taking up as much slack as you can b/t the two cams and locating the 'i' sprocket on its cam. I had to move the 'i' cam with a wrench to get it to line up. When I was finished, both cams were off the mark by less than a tooth, and to the intake side of the arrow on the bearing caps. Both off the same way are Anders' suggestion, and it worked.

3) Install the cam chain tensioner and spring.

4) Rotate the crankshaft through two complete revolutions back to TDC. The cam marks should now be very close to the arrows on the bearing caps, and a teeny bit offset to the intake side. If not, it will be easy to see which one is misaligned and you can correct this. Cameron and GregD suggested these.

Good luck.

Lyndon
